Review

At this point we should’ve been expecting a huge showdown with Amy, Sei, Meg and Jo aboard Django blasting RAPT units left, right and centre and generally raising the insurance premiums in downtown Tokyo, but it doesn’t quite go that smoothly, for instance Sei is ordered by her clan to disband the team after a mysterious faction swiftly attacks RAPT HQ, the little battle you saw at the very beginning of the series will finally fall into place here.

As far as the story goes, it has an ending of sorts, but it’s extremely open ended, with the new loose ends mainly cancelling out all of the ones that finally get resolved.

As far as action goes, this volumes got a healthy dosage of it with a frantic duel between Maria and Jo, a Doom style (showing my age here) deathmatch (or is it fragfest nowadays?), a gauntlet of Robot Guards aboard a futuristic Aircraft carrier, Django’s battle with the zombie cybot, and last but not least, an all or nothing storming of the RAPT tower. (Well we got there eventually!)

Personally I thought the toonshaded CG scenes were brilliant, but I know some of you out there hate this stuff with a passion. So this element of the show really boils down to your own taste. But as Toonshading goes, this was some great stuff, almost on the same level of fluidity and quality as Appleseed.

The only drawback is the way a new enemy or more precisely, the ones who were pulling the strings all along, seemed to be brought in a little too much at the last minute for my liking, I hadn’t really had chance to hate them enough. I can only hope the OVA makes up for this slightly rushed and unfinished ending. It almost feels like Gonzo were having so much fun making this show that they forgot they had to finish it.

At the end of the day Burst Angel is mainly about entertainment, a plot was merely sprinkled on top to try and keep some structure to all the gun fighting, mecha punch-ups, mass destruction and jiggling. Which, let’s face it, is all you want if you’re an action junky! (Eye-on-Anime)
