Haibane Renmei is a surreal anime created by Yoshitoshi ABe, the talent behind the similarly haunting Serial Experiments Lain.
For those of you not familiar with Haibane Renmei, it follows the story of Rakka, a newly hatched Haibane (angel like being) and her life in Old Home, where other Haibane live. It's an imaginative treat as she discovers the true meaning of the Haibane and their place in the world.
